KRISS BUIS: Magpul and MWI origins Empty KRISS BUIS: Magpul and MWI origins

Post by Solscud007 Thu Jan 05, 2012 4:30 pm

So when the KRISS was first in prototype stage they used HK MP7 sights. Those not familiar with the MP7, it can be shot like a pistol with the stock collapsed or a SMG with stock extended. Shooting the MP7 like a pistol uses blade sights and when shouldered the sight are flipped up for AR style sights.

Here you can see the pistol blade sights of the MP7
KRISS BUIS: Magpul and MWI origins 388118_240191472715057_157275704339968_590287_346191476_n

Here they are on the KRISS SMG prototype.

Here is another picture from SHOT Show 2007 showing those early prototype BUIS:
KRISS BUIS: Magpul and MWI origins Shotshow2007krisssmg

Then when the KRISS Vector came out the early production models came with Magpul designed MBUS.
KRISS BUIS: Magpul and MWI origins 378055_240198572714347_157275704339968_590300_1330929626_n

However these are not the same MBUS that we all know and love. These are made of metal and are the prototypes for the current MBUS.

The Magpul KRISS sights are dual function like the MP7 sights.

Then KRISS USA decided to go with MWI to make their next production BUIS.
KRISS BUIS: Magpul and MWI origins 387874_240191586048379_157275704339968_590291_453507265_n

According to KRISS Talk, a blog of the KRISS Super V, the Magpul sights were too costly. Considering that KRISS USA sells MI BUIS set for $280! I'm a little scared to know what the Magpul MBUS 2.5 cost is.

The KRISS MBUS are spring activated. There is a release button. However they do not lock in the upright position. You have to press the lock button over to keep them locked down. The one benefit, besides dual pistol sights, is that they are a slimmer profile than the current MI BUIS.

Edit: 8/11/12

So no one has stepped up to the plate. I will take one for the team. I pulled out my OEM KRISS MI BUIS front sight post along with the front sight post off my AR (which was factory installed and set from Palmetto State Armory) and the front sight post from my PTS (airsoft) MBUS.

L-R: MBUS, AR, KRISS

KRISS BUIS: Magpul and MWI origins P1010823

The AR is 20mm and the KRISS is 17.1mm However if you look closely it is just the threading that is longer on the AR. The business end above the flat disc is the same height. And that is all that matters. I installed the AR post in my KRISS BUIS and the KRISS post in my AR and they look the same. I was worried that the AR front post would bottom out but it didnt. At least right around where my original zero was. I did not test fire these. The KRISS BUIS sits on my Kel-Tec Shotgun and my AR has a 3-9x scope so my front sight is useless.

So I think you could install night sights if you wanted. Most important is to zero after you have done so. Although as KRISS Vector owners, you should have a flashlight on your KRISS hehe so no need for night sights.

Here is one Trijicon example: http://www.krisstalk.com/t185-kriss-sights-trij-fiber-post

That's cool I like the KRISS sights but I think my EOTech is going to get used most.

Yeah I use the EOTech 99.99% of the time. The Magpul sights are just for looks, gimmick and bragging haha.

Well guys, that's why the call 'em BUIS... Back Up Iron Sights... (or "Magpul Back-Up Sights") for when the nicer optics have a problem, right? ;)

Interesting stuff about the MP7 and early KRISS prototype use, too!

Yep. Also if you look at my set of MBUS 2.5, the rear sight doesnt have the Magpul Logo, the Front logo is upside down (rotated 180 deg to face backwards) and the machining of the spring notch in my front sight looks hand cut compared to the rear sight.

I think you have a true set of prototype MBUS 2.5 there! This shot from the web looks to be of a later "production" set:

Here is a (now broken) link to the old press release about KRISS USA (TDI at the time) and Magpul working on a few things together: http://www.kriss-tdi.com/press/press-releases/44-tdi-introduces-full-line-of-kriss-accessories-to-be-sold-through-acusport-dealer-network.html

Here is what it said...

FEB 1, 2008

KRISS Super V DC/HM Sight System and
KRISS Super V G30 MagEx Highlight Premier Accessory Line

Transformational Defense Industries, Inc. (TDI) unveiled today a new line of shooting accessories to complement its revolutionary KRISS Super V Vector SMG and CRB firearms. The accessories will be exclusively available at retail in February, 2008 through the AcuSport network of KRISS-certified firearms dealers and on the TDI website, www.kriss-tdi.com.

"The new line of KRISS accessories is an exciting extension of our brand mission to bring the very best solutions to market that enable never-before gains in an operator's ability to put more rounds on target, more often" said Chuck Kushell, CEO of TDI. "Two proprietary accessories that stand-out as exceptionally helpful to this quest are the standard KRISS Super V Vector DC/HM Sight System and the optional KRISS Super V G30 MagEx 17-round extension to the Glock 21 13-round magazine."

The KRISS Vector DC/HM Sight System consists of flip-up front and rear backup iron sights custom designed by TDI and manufactured by Magpul Industries Inc. in the U.S. for the KRISS Super V family of firearms. The sight is precision computer numerically controlled, machined from lightweight, strong, 6061-6T aluminum and hard anodized for environmental protection. Designed to be quickly mounted to the MILSTD M1913 "Picatinny" rail system with a hex head set screw which is provided along with the sights, the system features a spring-loaded flip-up button to deploys sights with front sighting post for elevation adjustment and a rear peep hole for windage adjustment. The DC/HM Sight System was designed for co-sighting with popular "red dot" sights, including L-3 EOTech holographic sights.

TDI also offers an optional KRISS G30 MagEx for the KRISS line of firearms manufactured by MagPul Industries. The KRISS MagEx G30 "+17" design quickly converts the Glock 21 13-round magazine to a full 30 rounds which assembles and disassembles easily with no special tools required. The magazine extension has an inner and outer sleeve of injection molded Magpul proprietary high-performance, fiber-filled polyamide (PA) composite material for strength, toughness and dimensional stability. The magazine extension also contains an ISMI premium spring, manufactured exclusively with certified aerospace specification alloys. The product uses standard Glock 21 13-round .45 ACP magazine components - magazine body, follower and base plate. The KRISS G30 MagEx is compatible with all KRISS Super V system .45 ACP firearms (SMG, CRB/SO) and with Glock 21 .45 ACP pistols.

The full line of KRISS accessories include:

Standard accessories: DC/HM Sight System, Super V TDI Foregrip, Super V Vector Grip Storage Module, Super V Cable/Lock System, (2) 13-round G 21 Magazines, and Super V Vector Cleaning Kit.

Optional accessories: Super V Single Point Sling, Super V Vector CRB Tactical Cover, Super V Vector Soft Cover, Surefire E1L with momentary switch, Super V Speed Loader, Super V Custom Hard Case with custom insert, EOTech 511.A65/1 sight, Super V GripPod, and Super V G30 MagEx. TDI also features its own Super V TSK Tactical Knife, with 6 3/4" LOA 11 3/4" blade manufactured by TOPS, Knives.

The branding on the latest OEM sights has become "louder" too! Very Happy Here they are on a SDP:
KRISS BUIS: Magpul and MWI origins Krissbrandedsights

Notice the rear adjustment and how the overall shape/lines have slimmed down too. These sure do remind me of the TROY Industries BattleSights. Notice the "MI" is gone too. Hmmmm, wonder if KRISS USA changed OEMs (like S&W, Ruger, etc. have on their AR platform). scratch

KRISS BUIS: Magpul and MWI origins Empty Another OEM for KRISS USA

Raden, I think you sniffed it out! On Diamondhead's link you posted is a big picture of logos that has the KRISS logo in it with these words above it:

Diamondhead USA proudly supplies these manufacturers, distributors and operators
KRISS BUIS: Magpul and MWI origins OEM%20-%20Apr2012-4

WHY IS THE DIAMONDHEAD™️ INTEGRATED SIGHTING SYSTEM FASTER AND MORE ACCURATE?
During high speed, high stress shooting, the eye needs reference points. The Diamondhead™️ Integrated Sighting System provides them. The conventional rear sight's round aperture and round (HK style) front sight housing, can make shooting at longer distances difficult and inaccurate. Remember, rear sights are blurry during aiming. The simple fact is that it is easier for the eye to find the exact center of a blurry diamond than the exact center of a blurry circle. It is even easier and quicker for the eye to find the exact center of a Diamondhead™️ rear sight’s aperture with the added posts at the corner of the diamond. These proprietary reference posts are unique to the Diamondhead™️ sight and are not found on any other iron sight.

The other main reason the Diamondhead™️ (Pat. & Pat. Pend.) diamond-shaped aperture is better than a conventional round aperture is because round apertures don’t give a truly ROUND picture of the front sight and target. The front sight tower of the rifle obscures the bottom portion of the conventional rear sight round aperture. This causes the bottom part of the round aperture to be flattened – not round. The result is that it is harder for the eye to quickly make an accurate decision about how high up in this flattened circle is the exact center. Take a look at a set of conventional (round) sights to see.

The 3:00 o’clock and 9:00 o’clock corners of the Diamondhead™️ aperture, combined with the added accuracy of the reference posts, completely eliminate this problem. Used in combination with the Diamondhead Premium DIAMOND Flip-Up Front Combat Sight™️ or the Diamondhead Premium “Auto-Ranger” Flip-Up Front Combat Sight™️, there will always be a clear reference for considerably more accurate (and faster) target acquisition.
